2011 marked the beginning of my life as a full-time floral and event designer which has felt like stepping off into a warm cushy creative free fall of possibility. It also marked my first overseas wedding which still has me itching to do more. It was a beautifully frightening year of surprises and perseverance. I loved it!

Here are some of my favorite things from this year: design-related or otherwise. Many of them are linked so click to your heart’s content…you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you for your support this year and for cheering me on. I am grateful.

Dare I say it? Oh What Fun was, well, loads of fun! The ladies (or as I like to call them Newbie Floral Designers) that came were just over-the-top fabulous and so eager to learn about flower arranging. I had such a wonderful time and I would venture to say they did too! (I might just have to make this an annual occurrence…)

First, a few detail shots of the design elements:

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! So grateful for the many people and opportunities in my life today. I am blessed beyond anything I deserve. Each day I place a perfect flower that I had nothing to do with making with other perfect flowers I had nothing to do with making I feel privileged and incredibly fulfilled.

Here’s a little arrangement (in an old sewing machine drawer) of Bittersweet, Asters, Chamomile, Wheat, and Scabiosa pods that I threw together for my family’s feast. And also an interpretation of an oldie but a goodie that just made me grin. (Cheese-allujah!)

Feast your eyes and ears and have a Happy & Blessed Thanksgiving!

I am not typically all about the conventional – the traditional. I prefer a twist on tradition and a nouveau approach to convention. A little drizzle of butterscotch on vanilla, if you will. For instance, you know the typical bridal show that houses endless booths of vendors “hawking” their wares and vying for your affection? The kind that feels like a pipe ‘n drape convention? The Not Wedding is anything but that! It’s the butterscotch drizzle on the vanilla pipe ‘n drape.

The Not Wedding is a new kind of bridal show with hand picked vendors that “put on” a wedding and reception complete with ceremony, lovey couple, bridal party, yummy food, and dancing galore.

So, imagine my joy when they approached me and asked if I would be a part of this stellar event in March?! I was beyond thrilled – not only because they have a reputation for excellence, but because of the caliber of vendors that are selected each year. I am flattered and stoked. (grin)

There are a couple of vendors out there that I recommend all the time. The Classy Chicks Trio is one of them. They are a) some of my favorite peeps in the universe and b) they kick butt as far as string players go. They can “whip up” any special request song (my favorite rendition so far has been Beautiful Day by U2) or play the Classics so beautifully you’ll think you’re in a scene right out of Pride and Prejudice.

When the Chicks – made up of  Mandi, Tiffany, and MaryBeth – recently revamped their website, I was asked to join the “styling” team for their photo shoot. They wanted something romantic, rustic, and had a dreamy vibe and I think they got it…think Secret Garden meets a royal hunting party with a bit of Handel’s Water Music tossed in for good measure. (yes…pun intended *wink)

Had two weddings this weekend. It was a whirlwind! I spent most of the day Sunday recovering, cleaning the loft, and sitting on my bum perusing blogs and making the most scrumptious 5 minute ice cream. (I added dark chocolate chunks…yummy.) What was not yummy about Sunday was that somehow I downloaded a virus onto my lil’ red laptop. This post was supposed to be published Monday, but wouldn’t work until that was removed. I was not a happy camper.

Speaking of yummy (see how I did that), the flowers this weekend were eye-popping gorgeous! Dahlias, loads of Ranunculus, David Austin Roses called Darcey Bussell, Dusty Miller, Raspberries…in a word: happiness. There were a few blooms still hanging on Monday morning so I snapped these to show them off a bit before they bit it. Thus, the images below for which I really, really am wishing I had a good camera.  (Come on, Santa!) Oh, and the goblets are new to my collection – can’t wait to use them in an actual wedding.

Colour_your_life

I stumbled onto this quote on Joy Thigpen’s blog a few days ago and it has really stuck with me:

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

— Ira Glass

I feel like I am just now breaking through this phase and let me tell you, breaking through is awesome. I’m learning, gosh, am I still learning. But, I’m finding my voice. I’m finding why I love this job so much. I’m finding my style and that little quirkiness that makes a design mine.

Consider this just a little encouragement boost if you’re just finding what you love and pursuing it. Consider it your own personal kick in the tushy. But consider it. And work through. Waking up to joy and possibility every morning will keep you going until you find your voice too…

I first met Paul & Tara at Belly General Store in Virginia Highlands. Almost immediately, I found myself drawn in by the ease and playfulness of their relationship and the way they put me at ease just being around them. Theirs is a love and friendship that makes you feel comfortable. Contentedly and gloriously comfortable. Even months after their beautiful day I still find myself grinning whenever I think of them. They’re just those kind of people and you can’t help adoring them for it.

Two things: The image above is of Paul & Tara’s sweet doggie, Niko, who wore a bow tie down the aisle like a champ. And the image below is of Paul’s groom’s cake because it’s just dang cute. (Paul plays for the Gwinnett Gladiators and I have no doubt that Tara is, in fact, his number one fan.)
